We are looking forward to contributing to the world of fisheries science, lobster biology and hatchery science. We are well suited to provide an excellent bridge between the fishing industry and research capabilities with our own facility to conduct world class research.

Mathematics Meets Marine Conservation: Investigating Lobster Ecosystems

  • Two York Masters students are using mathematical models to study local lobster ecosystems. Elisabeth James explores causes behind a mass crab and lobster die-off, while Matthew Sullivan assesses the Whitby Lobster Hatchery’s impact on lobster populations and local fisheries.

The Beat Beneath the Shell: Understanding Lobster Heart Rate and Stress

  • aminal welfare is incredible important at the Whitby Lobster Hatchery. Tia has returned to the hatchery to collecting heart rate data from female lobsters using infrared sensors to identify stress levels during captivity, aiming to improve their welfare by reducing stress in the future.
