Friends Of The Whitby Lobster Hatchery

Our annual ‘Friends of the Hatchery’ event took place earlier this month, an event the whole team look forward to when it comes around. It is a chance for all of us at the hatchery to not only reflect on the season, but also to thank everyone who has played a part in making the hatchery the organisation it is today. Tours of the hatchery and quayside took place first, giving a unique behind the scenes look at how we raise and care for our lobsters.

Talks about the charity (from general manager Joe R), the hatchery (from head aquaculturist Joe M) and discovery centre (from head aquarist Bryony) followed, discussing the successes of the season and plans for the future. Finally, talks from two guest speakers closed the night: Ainsley, who spoke about public opinion of the hatchery and it's impact on the lobster population and local community; and Ian, who covered new architectural plans for the fish quay buildings. Catering for the event was kindly provided by Mary’s Sandwich Shop, a huge thanks to them for keeping us fed throughout the event. We hope everybody who came along enjoyed the event, the hatchery and DC team certainly did! Look out for an event similar to this in the future that will be open to the local community.
